ボランティアセンター – Volunteer center 8月 31, 2007

しばらく前に奮起して申し込んだフリンジフェスティバルのボランティア。

ところがそれまでずっと暇だったくせに、急に家のことでばたばたしたりして、

結局今週の木、土、日の３日間だけ参加することに。

というわけで昨日初めてのシフトに行ってきました。夕方５時半〜８時15分まで。

ボランティアセンターに控えていて、何かあったら何でもしまっせという、いわゆる雑用係ですね。

ボランティアセンターはダウンタウンにあるテレビ局の一角を借りて設営されています。

昨日はヘリウムで30個近く風船をふくらませ、いくつか伝言を取り次いだ他は、

置いてあったピザを２切れ食べ、コーヒーを飲み、テレビを見て暇つぶし、とてもピースフルな初日でした。

女性のボランティアで「エイプリル」という名前の人がいて、ちょっと驚きました。

メイ（５月）とジューン（６月）は聞いたことあったけど、エイプリル（４月）もありだったのね。

小さな発見。日記に書かなきゃ。

後でポル夫に聞いたら、名前に使われるのはその三つだと言ってました。

ノーベンバー（11月）ちゃんとかはないらしい（多分ね）。

あとボランティアコーディネーターの男性がネイサンという非常に感じのよい男性なのですが、

彼の名前が呼ばれる度に、心の中で「姐さん」とつぶやくわたしであった。

As I wrote before, I registered Fringe festival volunteer. But the funny thing is that as soon as I signed up for the volunteer, I suddenly got busy doing things at home. So I only got three days to work which are Thu, Sat and Sun this week. Yesterday evening was my first shift at the volunteer center. A local TV company in downtown have offered a studio for a venue for the volunteer center . I was there to do basically any small jobs came up during my shift. I filled about 30 balloons with helium, run between two venues for some messages, had two slices of pizza and coffee, and watched TV. It was very peaceful evening. I met a volunteer girl called April. I know May and June but April. It was a small surprise that April can be a girl’s name too. According to Paul, the three months are the ones can be used for names. There is no girls called November or February (we imagine….).

花を盛る – Hanging baskets 8月 30, 2007

先日夏が終わってしまうぅぅとじめじめしていたところ、ここ数日はすかっと晴れて、まるで夏が盛り返してきたかのよう。

ま、正確には消える前にぱっと燃え上がるろうそくのようなもので、夏の名残なのだとは思います。それでも嬉しい。

夏のビクトリアと言えば、街中にあふれるハンギングバスケット。

シティ・オブ・ガーデンというふれこみのビクトリアとしましては、市がこうやってフラワーバスケットを飾り

ツーリスト貢献に一役買っています。

５月にまだ伸びていないバスケットが飾られ、夏の間にぐんぐん伸びてプランツが垂れ下がるほどに。

これが片付けられちゃうと、本当の夏の終わりかも。

来週ポル夫のお客様が日本からいらっしゃるのですが、ぎりぎり楽しんでいただけそうで良かったです。

Although I wrote that I was so sad that the summer was going, last a few days have been nice and hot. I know this is like flame of a burning candle gets bigger just before burning off, however, it’s still nice. One of the summer features in Victoria is those hanging baskets. To support the ‘City of Gardens’, Victoria city hall maintains the flower baskets. The symbol of the city are hung in May when the plants are still young and small. Through the summer the plants grow and add to its atmosphere. When the city cleans out the baskets we know it’s the end of summer. We are expecting some guests from Japan next week. I’m glad that they can still enjoy the City of Gardens.

茶の味 – Taste of tea 8月 29, 2007

ポル夫と一緒に住み始めて驚いたことの一つに、１日のお茶の摂取量があげられます。

朝起きるとまずお茶。食後にお茶。お茶の時間にお茶。ティーブレイクにお茶。テレビを見ながらお茶。寝る前にお茶。

一体１日に何回お茶を入れることでしょう。。。と言ってもティーバッグなので簡単ですが。

まあ元はイギリス人だからね。お茶好きの血が流れているんだよね。もっとも彼の場合は紅茶よりハーブティーです。

もう一つ驚いたのは、彼はハーブティーを混ぜて飲むこと。

例えばカモミールティーとミントティーのティーバッグを１個ずつ、計２個のティーバッグを一つのマグに入れて使います。

というわけで、いつもうちの茶セレクションは充実する一方。飲むのが追いつきませんです。

お茶の後ろのハッピーなカエルくんは、元ルームメイトによる手作り版画です。

One of the things surprising to me in living with Paul was the amount of tea he drinks a day. Tea for getting up, tea after meal, tea time, tea break, tea while watching TV and tea before going to the bed. Since we use tea bags it is not big deal to make tea but I was just surprised how many times he makes tea a day. It must come from his UK background. (He is originally from UK and immigrated to Canada in his 20’s) He usually enjoys herbal teas than black tea. This may not be so British though.

Another thing surprised me was that he combines teas. For example, he uses one chamomile tea bag and one peppermint tea bag for one mug. Interesting. The happy flog behind is a handmade print made by an artistic old room mate. He must be happy because we come to the tea section to say hi to him quite often.

夏の終わり – End of summer 8月 27, 2007

厳しい残暑と日々戦っておられる日本の皆様、本当にお疲れさまです。

日本から届くメールには例外なく「うだるような」「死ぬほど暑い」「猛暑」「熱帯夜」の字が躍っています。

まだまだ暑いようですが、しっかり食べて、ちゃんと寝て、どうかもう一息がんばってくださいませ。

一方こちらはもう夏の終わりです。

最高気温は東京や高知とそれほど変わらない30度弱なのですが、なんせ最低気温が10〜15度。

朝晩は涼しくて（というかけっこう寒くて）、パーカやらGジャンやら、はおりものなしでは外出できません。

咲き誇った花も散り、長くて暗くて湿った冬の到来を思うと、夏が去っていくことが悲しくてたまらないわたしです。

夏の終わりがこんなに悲しいのは、生まれて初めてかもしれませぬ。（まだちょっと早い？？）

風の中にはっきり秋を感じるビクトリアよりお届けいたしました。

Summer is going. It’s too early. But I can clearly feel in the wind that autumn is coming. Summer is going. I am so sad.

It was a record heat in Japan this year. All the emails from Japan mentioned how crazily hot this summer has been regardless what part of Japan they live. I feel so sorry for them and hope that my friends and family can start enjoying late summer with cooler temperature soon.

In contrast, it’s getting chilly here. The highest temperature is somehow still keeping about 30 degree. It’s pretty much same as Tokyo or Kochi in Japan. But, the lowest temperature here is about 10-15 degree. I can’t go out evenings without having a jacket. I can’t stop thinking about the dark, wet and long winter coming here soon. Oh, I am so sad that our beautiful summer is going. I don’t know what to do.

ボーン・アルティメイタム – Bourn Ultimatum 8月 26, 2007

ボーンシリーズ第三弾、ボーン・アルティメイタムを見てきました。個人的にマット・デイモンはあまり好きではないのですが（オーシャンズシリーズのドジ役とか、見ていて真剣にいらいらしてしまう）、ボーンシリーズは割と好きでして、アイデンティティー、スプレマシーとちゃんと見続けております。以下、ボーンシリーズについてのネタばれ含みますので、これから映画を見る方はお気をつけください。

今回はジェイソン・ボーンの秘密、つまり彼が失っていた記憶を取り戻すというお話で、流れの作り方、アクション、カーチェイス、追っ手を欺く罠のはり方、よどみなくさくさく進み、終始緊迫感を抱えたまま楽しめました。個人的にはパトカーを使ったカーチェイスシーンの最後部分、思わず奥歯を噛み締めちゃうような終わり方で圧倒された。

それにしても、相変わらず重い過去のフラッシュバックが続くジェイソン・ボーン。雑踏の中を歩いていても常に神経をはりめぐらし、心休まる瞬間はないのがよ〜く伝わってきました。映画とは言え、疲れるだろうなあ、あんな生活。登場人物、誰も笑わないし、微笑まないし、観客は苦みばしった顔を見続けることになります。マット・デイモン、まさかこんなに眉間のしわが似合うようになるなんて。

スプレマシーで死んでしまう彼女役の女優さんが、とても好きです。そして今回はちょっと不思議顔のジュリア・スタイルズがまた出てきます。わたしはこちらの彼女も割と好き。映画の最後に彼女がにやりと笑うのが小気味よかった。日本では11月に公開だそうですが、やはりヒットするんじゃないかな。アイ デンティティーとスプレマシーを見ている方には絶対おすすめです。

 

Went to see Bourne Ultimatum. Although Matt Damon is not my favorite actor (the dumb guy in the Oceans series really irritates me), I like this Bourne series. I have enjoyed the Bourne Identity and the Supremacy so I had to watch this one too. If you don’t want to know too much about this movie yet please skip the below.

The flow, action, car-chase, all of them were really thrilling and well-done. I didn’t have a moment to be bored. Especially how the car-chase scene ended was quite impressive. In this tense movie no one smiles or laughs. Jason Bourne never relax as he walks through a big crowd. What a restless life that is! But he manages to get his memory back.

I liked the girl who was killed in the Supremacy. I know he really liked her too. It was painful. Now Julia Stiles appears again and I liked her. She brings interesting energy into the movie. At the very end of the movie, she had a grin. I’m sure that she meant a grin of triumph. If you enjoyed the Identity and the Supremacy you should definitely watch this one too!

サンリモ – San Remo 8月 23, 2007

今日は久しぶりの晴れ！ポル夫の仕事がお休みだったので、サンリモというグリークレストランにランチに行きました。

日本にいた時はなじみのなかったギリシャ料理ですが、こちらではジャパニーズレストランと同じくらいいっぱいあります。

部屋の中央にはものすごく逞しく伸びたプランツが。店内はギリシャの青を使用して明るい雰囲気。

First fine sunny day in a week! Paul had a day off today so we went out for lunch to a Greek restaurant called San Remo. Greek wasn’t a common choice in Japan but there are many of them as same as Japanese restaurants here.

 

わたしがグリークレストランで好きなのはこちら、「カラマリ」と呼ばれるイカフライです。

「カラマリランチ」を頼むと、グリークサラダとライスが付いてきます。（ライスの上にカラマリがのってくる）

カラマリはタジキソースと呼ばれるヨーグルト系のタレにつけて食します。

ここのはイカは柔らかいし、衣も油っぽくなくて、とってもグーでした。

My favorite Greek dish is Karamari which is deep fried squid. I ordered Karamari lunch today. Their Karamari was so soft and wasn’t greasy at all! Good!!

「もし」のある人生 – Life with ‘if’ 8月 22, 2007

今日はバスでダウンタウンに出かけました。バスの料金は４年前にいた時は１ドル75セント（約175円）だったのですが、今回戻ってきたら２ドル25セント（約250円）に値上がりしていました。でも部屋の整理をしていたら以前のチケットが出てきたので、今日はその１ドル75セントチケットに50セントを足して使うことに。

こちらのバスは前乗り、前払いです。チケットと50セントを料金箱に入れて手すりにつかまって揺られていると、なんと！「さっき１ドル75セントのチケットを入れたお客さん、前に来てください」との車内放送が！！えーっ、わたし何か悪いことした？？ちょっとあせりつつドライバーのところに行くと、長いあご髭をたらしたドライバーおじさんに「あと何枚古いチケットを持ってるの？」と聞かれました。「あと１枚です」「あ、そう。古いチケットの場合はどうすればいいか確認するから、ちょっと待ってなさい」

バスに備え付けの電話を使ってわざわざ確認してくれましたが、結局はっきりしませんでした。ドライバーおじさんの上司はどうやら「それでいいんじゃない〜」的な返事だったようですが、ドライバーおじさんがそれでは納得いかなかったよう。「買った時はそれでよかったんだから、そのまま使えるはず」だそうです。あ、そうなの？！ 「だから次回はチケットだけ入れなさい。それでもしドライバーに何か言われたら差額を払えばいいから」なんだ、おじさんはわたしの味方だったのね。

その後ダウンタウンに着くまでの15分ほど、運転中のドライバーおじさんとお喋りしました。おじさんのいとこが日本人と結婚していて、おじさんは一度日本に行ったことがあるらしい。東京、宇都宮、京都に行き、その後奈良までヒッチハイクをしたそうです。奈良ではホテルなどない田舎にたどり着き、バス会社の事務所に泊めてもらったそう。しかし２月なのに暖房はなくて凍えるほど寒く（まあ本来泊まる場所じゃないしね）、トイレは「何もないただの穴だった」とか。。。いやいや、決してそれが今の日本のスタンダードではないと思いますがね。

CTスキャンを輸入する会社が外国人スタッフを探していて誘われたけれど、自分は旅を始めたばかりだったし、契約が２年だったので断った。もし１年だったらやったかも。そうしたら自分は日本に腰を落ち着けていたかもしれない。。。いやあ、人生いろいろ、ですなあ。あと一歩のところで日本生活を逃したビクトリアのバスドライバーおじさんの話、でした。でもそういう「もし」を持っている人生って、なんとなく楽しい気がします。またバスに乗ったらおじさんに会えるかしらん。

Bus fares have been raised since I lived here last time which was four years ago. It used to be $1.75 but now it’s $2.25. I found some old $1.75 tickets at home so I decided to use one of them with 50 cents to go to downtown today.

I put an old ticket and two quarters in the fare box and walked to the back. Then, I heard the bus driver calling (with a microphone!) ‘the passenger who put a $1.75 ticket’ which was me!!!! Oh, no…. Did I do something wrong?! I went up to him. The bus driver with long white beard asked me how many more old tickets I had. I said ‘one’. He phoned to his supervisor about use of old tickets while he was driving.

In short, he couldn’t get a clear answer. His boss sounded like nothing against what I did but the driver. He said ‘you still should be able to use the old ticket as it is.’ Oh, you were actually making the phone call for me! He suggested that just putting the ticket next time and if the driver says something I should add 50 cents. I see.

After that, we kept our conversation about 15 minutes till the bus got downtown. The driver’s cousin was married to a Japanese so he has visited Japan once. He went to Tokyo, Utsunomiya, Kyoto and then hitchhiked to Nara. In Nara, he ended up somewhere was not touristic at all. There was no hotel or anything. A Japanese bus driver let the Canadian bus driver (although he wasn’t one then I suppose) spend one night in their office. It was freezing night in Feb and there was no stove in the office. The toilet was just like a hole. Sounds like true adventure to me!

The driver went on. A company importing CT scans was looking for an English speaker. They offered me two-year contract. But I had just started to travel then and I didn’t want to settle down yet. If the offer was one year, I might have taken though…. I enjoyed talking with someone who had a near miss with life in Japan. Having some ‘if’ makes your life more fun and rich. At least, it seems that way to me. I look forward to seeing him again on board.

ロスト・イン・プロナンシエイション – Lost in pronunciation 8月 21, 2007

先日ドライヤーで髪を乾かしている時に全く脈絡なしに思い出したのですが

オランウータン(orangutan)は英語では「オランガタン」という。

いつかアメリカ人の友人ダンが「森でオランガタンが」と話すのを聞いて、

一体森に住んでいる何のことだろう。。。としばし思いをめぐらせた経験あり、です。

もっと身近な例では、アルコール(alcohol)。

アルコールって、英語発音では「アルカホー(ル)」。（「ル」の部分は消え入りそうに）

昔ホームステイをしていた時にホストマザーに教えてあげたら、「まあ随分あっさりしてるのね」と言われた経験あり、です。

どうも日本語は、英語を取り込む際に本家よりも滑らかにする傾向があるのか？！

でも英語だと思って口にした言葉が英語圏の人に通じないと、とても困ります。

先日もアルミホイル(aluminum foil) で苦い思いをいたしました。

ドラッグストアで「アルミニウムホイルありますか？」と店員に聞いてみた。

英語ではホイルの前に「アルミ」だけじゃなくて「アルミニウム」と付けるのは知っていたので 、

確かにそう言ったのに、嗚呼、悲しいかな、店員さんには通じず。

「アルミニウムホイルありますか？！」をなんとかの一つ覚えのように繰り返した挙句、

「あれ、英語の発音はもしかしてホイルじゃなくてフォイルだっけ？！」とわたしが思い出すのと、

親切な店員さんが「もしかしてアルミニウムフォイルのこと？！」と言い出すのがほぼ同時でありましたよ。

というわけでオランウータンは、オランガタン。

アルコールは、アルカホー(ル)。（あくまでルは消え入りそうに）

アルミホイルは、アルミニウムフォイル。

以後、お見お知りおきを。

 

The other day, when I was using a hair dryer, I suddenly thought about orangutan. Orangutan is called orangutan in Japan as well but in a slightly different way. It sounds like ‘oranutan’. For some reason, we drop the ‘g’ from it. When I heard the English word from a native English speaker for the first time, I couldn’t get it. I had to ask the speaker what creature he was talking about.

Another example is alcohol. In Japanese, alcohol is alcohol but with a slightly different pronunciation. It sounds like ‘alcol’. For some reason, we drop the ‘ho’ from it. When I told this cultural difference to my host mother when I was home-staying in Seattle, she was surprised at its much simpler sound.

Japanese language can be very flexible to absorb and take over foreign words as you probably know. I wonder if the process of absorbing a new word drops a few alphabets to make it easier to remember or pronounce for Japanese. But if the words, which I believe usable in English-speaking countries, are not really usable that can be very confusing and irritating.

The other day, I was at a drug store to look for an aluminum foil. Although it is called ‘alumi-foil’ in Japan, I didn’t forget to say ‘aluminum foil’ to a sales clerk. ‘Could you tell me where aluminum foils are?’ But, she didn’t get it. I repeated my question many times. After a while, I realized that foil almost sounded like ‘hoil’ in Japanese. So the sales clerk heard me saying ‘Could you tell me where aluminum hoils are?’ Almost at the same time as I realized my mistake, she came to an idea what I was trying to say so she took me where aluminum foils were. Phew.

This can be reverse situation for English speakers. If you’d like to tell a story about orangutan, you need to drop the ‘g’ and say ‘oranutan’. If you want to ask some alcohol, don’t forget to simplify the word and pronounce like ‘alcol’. If you ever need an aluminum foil, just make sure to call it ‘alumi-hoil’. There are always some tricks to survive when you are away from your hometown.

やっぱり駄目でした – Nobody likes it 8月 20, 2007

昨日友人がうちに遊びに来てくれました。

先日のハズレチップス（前の前の項を参照のこと）を、「初めて買ってみたけどいまいちだった〜。食べてみて〜」と出してみました。

結果は、「なんか油っこいねー」のコメントをいただき、全然減らず。撃沈。

やっぱり駄目だったか。。。しかしランチは美味しくいただきました。

N子がご近所のデリからスモークサーモンキッシュを、L子は手作りのほうれん草とクスクスサラダを持ち寄り、

わたしは初めて作ったひよこ豆のスープと、ニース風サラダをサーブして、お腹いっぱいガールズランチになりました。

下は全然減らなかったチップスの図。ランチの写真は撮るのを忘れました。

I had two girlfriends came over yesterday. I still had the thumb-down chips (see the post before previous one). I served some but I didn’t want to cheat on my friends so I said ‘I got the chips the other day but I didn’t quite enjoy it. What do you think?’ The result was obvious. One of my friends commented that it was quite greasy and nobody liked it. Oh, well……..

We had a nice lunch though. A friend brought nice smoked salmon quiche from her local deli and the other one brought home-made spinach and couscous salad. I served my first-try chick pea soup and nicoise salad. However I forgot to take a photo of the beautiful lunch. The above is eternally leftover chips.
